This is a difficult time so there is no pressure on parents to do any of these activities. There is enough stress added to many households as it is. These are just suggestions if you want them…and the suggested work I am putting up for our own school and my multi-grade class of 2nd, 3rd and 4th …but don’t forget to try and slot some reading time into your day! There are activities here for children from 3 years to 12, just select your own class level.
If you partake in the activities I would encourage you use a copy and keep everything you do each day in the one copy. Maybe you can show all your work to your teacher when you return to school!
Active Home Week!
Grab your skipping rope/ go for a cycle/ play tennis, football etc and don’t forget to stretch…let’s see how flexible you are? Use these stretching exercises every time you exercise.

Homonyms are words that are pronounced the same as each other (e.g., “maid” and “made”) or have the same spelling (e.g., “lead weight” and “to lead“).
When homonyms have the same sound, they are called “homophones.” When they have the same spelling, they are called “homographs.” (Homographs with different sounds (e.g., “tear drop” and “to tear a hole”) are called “heteronyms.”)
Therefore, it is possible for a homonym to be a homophone (same sound) and a homograph (same spelling), e.g., “vampire bat” and “cricket bat“.

Select the topic of your own choice. Maybe you could choose the topic of ‘pirate’ or ‘volcano’ since you recently have learned new vocabulary on those topics. To help you I have pages below linking into both ‘pirate’ and ‘volcano’. Read through it, with an adult if possible, discuss the different words and sentences and see if you can spot your recent words of the day! This sheet should help you in creating a story…discuss characters…settings…problems…conclusions etc.
You may not even start the story writing part of it today…just talk about your theme and plan what will happen in the story.
English ‘Words of the Day’ (WOTD)
Expand your child’s vocabulary daily with the Word of the Day.
Junior classes: There will be a vet themed word each day (taken from Nibbler’s Aistear Adventures)
Middle classes: This week we will begin ‘jungle’ themed words of the day (Taken from Language for Living box 2) (For those in my classes who may have done these already please look at the senior words of the day now)
Senior classes: This week we will begin ‘desert’ themed words of the day (Taken from Language for Living Box 3)
Introduce the new word daily, discuss it and put it into a sentence. Plan for the use of this word throughout the day, in written work or orally. Display the word in a prominent place for your child to see it, creating a word wall. Revise the growing bank of words daily to ensure retention to long term memory.

Addition table fact’s for this week – addition 5’s
Beware I have made this song up myself (it was meant to just be for kids’ ears alone at school!) but I find by singing it helps them retain the number facts. Play it a few times and encourage your child to join in. It may help to write the facts of a sheet of paper for them as they song. It starts loud…so lower your volume!
Multiplication Tables for this week x5
Practice singing them over and over again. If you know them, you could try writing them out.

SPHE (Social Personal & Health Education)
Watch the two videos below. Decide on an assembly point in your house in case there was a fire, check the batteries in your fire alarms and create a poster for your family illustrating the dangers of fire/ fire safety. (See poster example below)
I have two videos on fire safety for you today. The first video talks about the dangers of fire…that we need fuel, oxygen and heat for a fire. When one of these elements isn’t present there will be no fire.
The second fire shows two children learning about fire safety from two fire fighters at a fire station. (NOTE: They say…’when you see the light, pull to the right’…as in when a driver sees the light of a fire engine they should pull to the right to let the fire engine pass…in our case, since we drive on the left side of the road we pull to the left!)
